The “Agrotikon” Studio

By 1986, Nikos Papazoglou—the voice behind *Ekdikisi tis Gyftias* (1978) and *Dithen* (1979)—had already released his first solo album, *Haratsi* (1984), and was working in his studio, the new “Agrotikon” at 14 Eptalofou Street in Toumba, recording his next album

Amid the “clouds” of recording sessions, performances, and music production, he organized a summer “campaign” that took him across Greece; the concert in his hometown of Thessaloniki stood out—as always—and, together with the Athens concert, marked the end of his annual tour.

Under the full Moon

It was Monday, August 18, 1986, when Nikos Papazoglou appeared at the Forest Dossous of Thessaloniki, under the full moon. With him on stage was an excellent 9-member band, “Tachia Thessaloniki”, (Thessaloniki Express), featuring:

♦Nikos Kapilidis (drums).

♦Christos Kilias (percussion).

♦Dimitros Arabatzis (electric and acoustic guitar).

♦Dimitris Starovas (electric and acoustic guitar).

♦Manolis Sideridis (bass).

♦Giorgos Andreou (piano).

♦Giannis Kyrmos (bouzouki)—who stepped in for the band’s regular member, Vangelis Liolios for this specific concert.

♦Eleni Kalantzopoulou (clarinet).

 ♦Maria Reboutsika (violin).

The discovery

The venue was packed —inside and outside the theater—the sound was a balanced, and authentic mix, and the audience felt like a single, united body. It was an experience of mystical communion, Dionysian fervor, and lyricism.

Forty years later, this concert comes to life again through the grooves of a vinyl record, thanks to an unexpected gift from Nikos: two master tapes discovered in a “crack in time” in his basement as recently as 2023.

The recording was processed with great love and respect, and without any desire to smooth out its “rough edges” or imperfections.

The recording

The release—produced, as always, by Nikos’s own label, “Strongyloi Diskoi”—comprises 19 songs pressed onto a double vinyl record housed in a heavy gatefold sleeve, which features previously unseen photographs from Nikos Papazoglou’s personal archive.

The sound was engineered by his longtime collaborator, Christos Megas.

The unique artwork was designed by Simos Saltiel.

The Soul

The double vinyl could not contain the entirety of that evening at the Theatro Dassous; it did, however, capture its soul and the electric, Dionysian fervor that uniquely defined the musical encounters between Nikos Papazoglou and his audience.
